A silvery-white, soft, and lightweight metal, belonging to the alkali metal group. It is highly reactive and can ignite spontaneously in air. Sodium reacts violently with water, producing hydrogen gas and caustic sodium hydroxide. Sodium occurs abundantly in nature and is commonly found in salt deposits and sea water.
